Grieve’s art is about a free orchestration of the elements of a visual language, such as line, colour, tone and texture, into a composition not restricted by natural forms. His paintings ...express the moods, principles and qualities often ascribed to “things” from the material world – qualities such as beauty, violence, passion, harmony or discord. Jeff Makin, 2005.
Robert Grieve was born in Melbourne. After graduating with a degree in biochemistry at Melbourne University in 1945 he started having formal art lessons and joined the Victorian Artists’ Society attending evening life-classes alongside artists such as Fred Williams.
