In his works Tony Irving is always telling a story and weaves together a narrative that hints at more that is evident at the surface (in this work he paints himself reflected in the vase). His great skill is the ability to meld the classical styles of the masters he admires – Vermeer, Rembrandt and others – with his own entirely contemporary capturing of scenes and highly individual vision. His mastery of light ads to a sense of quiet drama.
